Experience in drilling observation boreholes and the installation of borehole instruments
Beginning with boreholes for monitoring crustal strain for the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, we have engaged in hundreds of projects involving observation boreholes monitoring seismicity and crustal movements in Japan. For the purpose of observation networks of crustal strains and earthquakes, borehole instruments for monitoring seismic and volcanic activities, multi-component instruments, strain indicators, tilt meters, various kinds of seismometers, and water pressure meters were inserted into these holes by NEID, the Association for Development of Earthquake Prediction (ADEP), the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), AIST, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Universities and private companies.
Our drilling and installation techniques acquired from observation of crustal movements have been developed together with the Tono Research Institute of Earthquake Science (TRIES), and are owned by ADEP, AIST, manufacturers of the Techno Sugaya and the Macome corporation. Our original tools of special bailor dredging slimes and casing scrapers for cleaning holes before an installation are patented. The method used for setting a multi-component instrument in place accurately was also patented jointly with ADEP, AIST, Macome in 2012.
